How do I connect an AI assistant to SEOBetter (MCP)?

SEOBetter Pro and every AppSumo lifetime tier can be driven by an AI assistant such as Cursor or Claude Desktop. The assistant connects to your WordPress site over MCP (Model Context Protocol) and gets 27 tools: research a topic, write an article, apply fixes, preview the draft, publish or schedule it, and maintain your existing posts.

Everything the assistant does runs through the same SEOBetter code as the screens in wp-admin, so the articles, scores and checks are identical. The assistant is a remote control, not a different engine.

What you need

  • SEOBetter Pro 2.0.6 or newer, or any AppSumo lifetime tier, with an active licence
  • WordPress 6.9 or newer
  • An assistant that supports remote MCP servers: Cursor or Claude Desktop

Step by step

  1. In WordPress, open SEOBetter, then Settings, and find the AI assistants (MCP) box.
  2. Click Install the SEOBetter Agent add-on. The add-on is downloaded from SEOBetter, checked against its published checksum, installed and activated. If the button is missing, your WordPress is older than 6.9 or your user cannot install plugins.
  3. In the same box, click Install the free WordPress MCP Adapter. This is a plugin published by WordPress; install and activate it like any other.
  4. Create an Application Password: Users, Profile, scroll to Application Passwords, name it "AI assistant" and click Add New. Copy the password; WordPress shows it once.
  5. Copy your site's MCP endpoint from the AI assistants box. It looks like https://your-site.com/wp-json/mcp/mcp-adapter-default-server.
  6. Add the server to your assistant:
    • Cursor: add a server with that URL and an Authorization: Basic ... header. The Basic value is username:application-password encoded in base64.
    • Claude Desktop: its configuration runs local commands, so use the Adapter's proxy: command npx, arguments -y @automattic/mcp-wordpress-remote@latest, and the environment variables WP_API_URL (your endpoint), WP_API_USERNAME and WP_API_PASSWORD (the Application Password).
  7. Ask the assistant to list its SEOBetter tools. You should see 27, from get-site-context to eeat-audit-post.

Who can publish

The assistant can do exactly what the user who owns the Application Password can do. An Editor or Administrator can publish, an Author can publish their own posts, a Contributor can only save drafts. There is no separate setting to turn publishing on or off.

A first conversation to try

"Use SEOBetter to write an article on how ChatGPT chooses which sites to cite, save it as a draft, show me the preview, and publish it if the GEO score is above 80."

The assistant will research, write, score, save a draft, show you the rendered preview, and publish only if the score passes.
